Summer vacation #1: Marco Island

For my mother-in-law’s 70th birthday, my husband and his brother planned a special 3-day family vacation. We reserved rooms at a beach-front hotel on Marco Island and crossed Alligator Alley to head over to the Gulf coast.

The beach was so different from Southeastern Florida. Tiny, delicate shells covered the sand, making Finn’s efforts to walk to the water a bit difficult…

Marco Island's shelly beach...

…but just beyond the shells we found fine-grained, smooth sand and calm, peaceful waters, which made wading and swimming so easy:

UntitledFinn swam a little, splashed around a little, played in the sand a little,

goofed around a little (even when we asked him to stop),

…and romped around a LOT:

He and his older cousins tackled each other, played “bumper bellies” with birthday balloons inside their shirts, and formed pyramids in the pool. Finn had so much fun with them that he refused to get out of the car when we arrived back home. “I’m going back to Marco Island!” he insisted, and then cried for an hour. It was one of those times that I felt guilty for my decision to have only one child.

But there’ll be more fun and more vacation time, I promise, Finch! Just wait!
